Zanskar Sacred Sites – Restore and Protect

In June 2024, Khandro Thrinlay Chodon was invited by the local monasteries and people of Zanskar to offer empowerments, transmission and teachings. During this visit Rinpoche visited again the famous Sani Gompa. This ancient gompa and its surrounds incorporates several extremely important sacred sites of ancient India, of Buddhism and especially the Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism which is the practice of the local community. The sacred place is a complex of sites worth planning and preserving – Sani gompa, Kanishka stupa and one of the Eight Great Charnel grounds of this cosmos (Dechen Dalwar). Khandro Rinpoche and Khachodling are working with the local community to ensure planning and restoration of this sacred place protects its past into the future. May it remain a place of reverence and practice for generations to come.

Funds will be used to restore and protect the ancient Kanishka stup and Dechen Dalwar, the great Charnel Ground of the Northwest, both of which are situated next to Sani Gompa in Sani, Zanskar. This project is being conducted with the Zanskari local community and aims to retain the ancient flavour of these sites while recognising and protecting their spiritual significance for generations to come.
