In 2024 Tenzin graduated with a B.Sc. in Physics and Medical Science (Immunology/Pathology major) from Sydney University. Currently Tenzin is pursuing a postgraduate degree in Medical Physics.

Connection with Khachodling : Commenced in 2008/9 when Tenzin was 9 years of age, living in India with his parents. His father Jamyang was a recognised historian of Tibet and relative of Khandro Rinpoche’s mother. Jamyang had been exiled from Tibet and was living in India as a refugee with his wife, also a refugee. Khachodling sponsored Tenzin’s education in India and after a few years the family were offered residency in Australia (January 2014). Here Khachodling and its members aided their relocation, schooling of Tenzin and general adjustment to western civilisation. Sadly Jamyang-la passed away on 25th March 2016. Tenzin and his mother Tsering continue as close inner family of Khachodling.

Tenzin’s Reflections on his life’s path and Khachodling: Growing up in India as part of a Tibetan refugee family, I remember how life-changing it was when my dad first approached my dear ani-la, Khandro Thrinlay Chodon, for help to support my schooling. At that time, I was just a shy and curious child living in a rural place, where my local school had limited resources for a proper education. Her support – which has now grown into the wonderful project called Khachodling (who could have imagined!) meant that I could attend a school with better English classes and higher-level maths facilities. It felt like a whole new world had opened up – one full of possibilities and an environment that would nurture my growth as a person.

Fast forward to today, and I am living in Sydney, where I have completed high school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in physics and medical science. This year, I am now pursuing postgraduate studies in Medical Physics – one step closer to my dream of becoming a clinical physicist, a role where I can use my physics knowledge to help treat people. I often look back and reflect on how important it was to get that strong English and Maths foundation that Khachodling helped me build, making it so much easier to not only adjust, but flourish in the Australian education system.

Sometimes, Ani La and I laugh fondly about our early days – how timid I was, standing in awe listening to her students speak in that distinct Aussie accent, which sounded so strange to my ears that time. Who would have thought that decades later, I sound just like them! Those moments help remind me how even such small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact. Who knows? Maybe I would never have discovered my love for science or pursued a career in physics if I hadn’t gone to a better school when I did. For me, Khachodling’s help didn’t just mean getting into a better school; it gave me confidence that I can go out there and explore my passions without having to worry about anything.

A special note from Tenzin Tsokney to potential supporters :

Now, more than ever, I hope that my story can inspire those who might consider supporting Khacholding. A simple helping hand can truly be a catalyst for children like me, or for ones out there in remote Himalayan regions, who might feel held back by limited resources yet still dream big. Receiving educational and spiritual support from my loving Ani-la has shaped the person I am today, and writing this makes me realise just how much of a chance Khachodling gave me to dream beyond my circumstances.

I hope many more children, just like I was, will get the same opportunity to learn, grow, and follow their dreams. I will always be grateful for Khachodling’s support, and I am excited to see how many more lives the organisation has and can still, touch. I believe that Khachodling’s education/mentoring programme is proving that small steps, taken with compassion and a belief in someone’s potential, can truly empower a person and set them on a life-changing journey.
