Togden Shakya Shri’s Ngondro Transmission 

We rejoice to announce that Khandro Rinpoche will bestow transmission of her great grandfather, Togden Shakya Shri’s Ngöndro “Gateway to the Island of Liberation”. This profound preliminary practice emanated from his mind-treasure, whereupon it both concisely and poetically brings together the essential foundational practices of Ngöndro with the vast view of Dzogchen. 

At the request of her long time students, Wednesday evening, 7th October 2026 at 6.30pm  Rinpoche will bestow the transmission live in Sydney at the home of Diedre Niar in Macquarie Park. The transmission will be also available online via zoom link.

A few words from Khandro Rinpoche:

“For many years I have been teaching the ancient wisdom of our lineage to sincere and interested students, not only in Australia but around the globe. Since the early days, some students have been practising Mahamudra Ngöndro, and some aspects of Shakya Shri’s Ngöndro. During this time, I have also been testing students’ devotion and allowing their fractured trust to deepen and heal.

I am now willing to respond to their sincere and continued requests to deeply focus on this particular Ngöndro, which has become my own treasured practice. Each time I open this text and glance into its pages, the pith instructions of my Root Gurus, who are no more in this ordinary world, become alive and vibrant in my heart.

In Australia, I began teaching to a small community in Sydney, and now that groundwork seems to have come full circle. Once again, I am having an extended time here, this time with my very beautiful yogi brother, as we, together with dedicated students of our lineage, continue to deepen the Dharma. So this is a timely coming together.

I am also now in the midst of finalising the translation of this heart felt Ngöndro text. Causes and conditions have come together to draw me to offer this transmission at this particular time and in this particular place.

As we deepen our understanding of Dharma, it is important that we utilise these precious tools of practice to transform our lives at their very root, so that we may become liberated from the prison of samsara. This Ngondro of Togden Shakya Shri is very profound for it comes from his extraordinary mind. I have been able to sit in the essence from this very practice. There are always different calibres of students but you each will need to look deeply. Please do not dismiss it as introductory. The Great Perfection can evolve from Ngondro itself. In the upcoming months I will deepen the teachings on the Ngondro and as students you will need to make commitment to practice and the accumulation of required numbers. This week I will commence this focus with the Ngondro transmission and as I travel around Australia, its teachings will follow.

Please know that each of the authentic masters who have recently visited  Australasia has acknowledged this Ngöndro, so that all of you who practice this ‘Gateway to Liberation’ are accepted within each of their mandalas.”

Togden Shakya Shri (1853-1919) was and is considered a peerless realized Master of his time. A 19th-century Tibetan yogi whose lineage placed strong emphasis on direct experience, meditation, retreat and disciplined practice. His Ngöndro is not simply a preliminary practice to be completed before moving on; it is a profound practical tool for transforming body, speech and mind, while training and preparing practitioners for advanced Vajrayana practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen.

Shakya Shri established Himalayan communities where hundreds of practitioners lived simply and practised under close guidance. His lineage continues through the blood and bone of direct family as well as realized students across generations. Receiving and undertaking this Ngondro within a living lineage connected to Togden Shakya Shri, represents an incredibly precious and rare continuity of an ancient yogic tradition in the modern world.

Profoundly ancient and intimately embodied, please do regard this transmission as from an exceptionally pure source –  one rooted in the unbroken ground of the lineage, yet alive and present in the human form. It is your way, your opportunity to directly meet the essence-mind of the peerless Jnana Shakya Shri”
