Losar – Lunar New Year
Wed, 18 February All day

Losar is Tibetan New Year.
2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, 2153 according to Tibetan lunar calendar. At Losar important rituals are completed by Himalayan peoples. Prior to the commencement of the new year, a deep cleaning of the old year takes place. This means house, surrounds, family and self are all cleaned and purified on the last day of the outgoing year. All negative aspects are let go. Khachodling usually sponsors a purification puja at this time.
After cleansing and purification Himalayan peoples are then ready to welcome in the new year and will consciously invite virtuous and auspicious intentions and activities. Special food such as khapse and gyathuk is prepared and friends are invited into the home with kind and generous hearts. New prayer flags are raised and incense burned.
The Fire Horse Year is about vitality, energy, and renewal — a time when people are inspired to take bold steps and undertake outer and inner journeys. This particular combination of movement and renewal comes together only every 60 years. It is believed that under this astrological sign, Buddha took birth and Milarepa achieved spiritual Sindhis.
The horse symbolises freedom, endurance and momentum and is closely linked to the wind element, thus prayer flags often carry the sign of the Wind-horse, carrying blessings across sky and space to all beings. This combination with the element of fire, which brings transformation and illumination, opens the potential for action, clarity and karmic transformation.
