Buddha Purnima

Vesak Day also known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti

This is considered one of the most auspicious days on the Buddhist calendar, especially for Buddhists in India and South east Asia. It falls on full moon in the month of May and it commemorates the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni in Lumbini, current day Nepal. Vesak is noted by the United Nations as an official holiday.

The day of Buddha’s birth is celebrated by other Vajrayana Buddhist communities on a different day, known as Tampei Duchen which is within the 4th month of the lunar calendar, known as Saga Dawa.
